Of Hot Tubs and Jacuzzis

"Hot tub" and "Jacuzzi" are two terms that are often used interchangeably. However, to set matters straight, "Jacuzzi" is actually the name of an inventor of a type of hot tub, but because these hot tubs became so popular in the 1970s, the brand became synonymous with the product itself.

In the early half of the 20th century, the Jacuzzi brothers came to California from Italy and were known for their innovative products. They started with inventions for the aviation industry and later on experimented with hydraulics, making considerable progress with the agricultural pump. The Jacuzzi brothers soon came up with the J-300, or a hydrotherapy pump for personal use, and later sold it to schools and hospitals.

The rise of the hot tub

Hot tubs -- and Jacuzzis, if you will -- are essentially tubs or pools filled with water that is heated to a level that is high enough for hydrotherapy purposes. Jacuzzis are equipped with jets that shoot of streams of warm water, which is especially effective for the relief of sore muscles and joints.

Roy Jacuzzi produced the first whirlpool spa in 1958, which he called the Roman. It was based on the engineering used for the hydrotherapy pumps developed by Roy's parents and grandparents. These pumps were modified to be able to integrate them into a standalone unit. He then marketed his invention all over the country, taking advantage of the Americans' obsession with cleanliness and indulgent lifestyles. It became such an overnight success that within just a few decades, the Jacuzzi brand has come to mean the invention itself. Informally, a hot tub is determined to be distinct from a Jacuzzi because of the absence of jets. However, there are now wooden barrel hot tubs that also make use of jets.

A hot tub by any other name

In industry discussions, Jacuzzis and hot tubs are used interchangeably, and rightfully so. Both products have started to share the same features, and if the Jacuzzi brothers have revolutionized the hot tub by way of their invention then they deserve to be immortalized in the history of the hot tub evolution.

In any case, hot tubs are quickly gaining popularity not only with high-income families, but with anyone who sees a hot tub not as a luxury but as an appropriate reward for somebody working hard for his or her money. Soaking in a tub is an ideal way to relax and enjoy good company. For all these creature comforts, hot tubs become inexpensive items in the long run. Moreover, with a little effort in searching for a hot tub that would fit your style and budget, you would soon be able to reap the benefits of having a convenient personal spa right in the comfort of your home.
